HarvardKey is Coming This Fall!

August 13, 2015

HarvardKey is nearly here! A single credential spanning nearly the entire Harvard Community — and a replacement for the current PIN System — HarvardKey gives users one identity for life that enables access to the applications and services Harvard users need every day. HarvardKey makes it easier for new users to get started, makes role changes seamless for users who change roles, jobs, or classifications, and keeps the Alumni community connected to their alma mater.

Brought to you by the Identity & Access Management program at Harvard University Information Technology, HarvardKey will be available to Alumni users on September 22, with a first-wave rollout November 12 to University users in FAS, CADM, GSE, GSD,  HDS, HSPH, and SEAS. HarvardKey benefits include:

  • Easy onboarding: New Harvard users visit key.harvard.edu to verify their identity, set a password, and get started
  • Self-service portal: Users can reset passwords, set or change recovery email addresses, and update multifactor authentication details at any time
  • Multifactor authentication: Optional “two-step login” boosts security by backing up login name and password with an easy-to-use smartphone app (options for those without smartphone are available)
  • Unified interface: Users will see HarvardKey login screens whenever they access University applications and services, reinforcing that personal data is safe and secure

Every user who currently logs in to applications or resources using the PIN System will start seeing the new HarvardKey user interface — including a mobile-responsive design that’s much easier to use on your tablet or phone — beginning September 22. Users who aren’t in the initial rollout waves can continue to use their existing username/password credentials (such as HUID, XID, or eCommons) in HarvardKey login screens until they’re eligible to claim their own HarvardKey.

If you or your team members are in the November 12 rollout wave (FAS, CADM, GSE, GSD, HDS, HSPH, and SEAS), you’ll be receiving more information from the Identity & Access Management team in the coming weeks about when and how to claim your HarvardKey — and, if you’re a people administrator, how to help get the word out to your user populations.  As rollout progresses, users across the University Community will also be receiving  information via email, their existing login interfaces, and a variety of other channels.
