Ad Hoc Reporting Project Update – November 2019

November 14, 2019

The Ad Hoc Reporting Project (ARP)’s mission is to implement a modernized ad-hoc reporting software solution (Tableau) and support the migration from Brio to the new platform. Our number one guiding principle for this project is to advance HUIT’s vision of empowering the Harvard community through technology that enables effortless access to data, information and knowledge.

Currently, DMS is actively working to:

  • Begin the Wave 1 implementation of the project
  • Implement the Change Management Plan, including a robust communication and training strategy
  • Continue with the building of our Tableau platform, Tableau Server

Wave 1 Implementation Begins!

  • Beginning in October, the Wave 1 Implementation phase of the project began. The BRIO/IR users survey identified the cohort that will participate in the implementation.
  • The project team met with the LIMs and several training participants to describe the communication and training plan, and LIMs have requested Tableau desktop licenses for their staff.
  • The first set of Tableau Workshops have been held, with more planned in November and December. These workshops are helping Wave 1 users get connected to the Harvard Data Warehouse and providing some basic navigational and Tableau Tips
  • The instructor-led training program will begin in November with a foundational Tableau Kickstarter course, an Intermediate Tableau course and a course on the Tableau Prep product, which is intended for those who do extensive manipulation and cleaning of data. These courses will continue throughout the end of the calendar year and into January.
  • To assist users with specific BRIO conversions, a series of Drop-In sessions will also be offered during this time period. Users will be able to bring their questions to these sessions and receive individual help.

Tableau Server Update

The DMS team is making excellent progress building the Tableau Server platform. The team has been able to successfully integrate Harvardkey authentication with Tableau Server. The team continues to proceed with incorporating elements into the Server to enable Tableau Creators to upload, secure and share their Tableau dashboards. The team is still on target to complete the environment build by the end of this calendar year.
