Schools and Units Need to Start Using the New I-9 Form Starting on January 22

January 12, 2017

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a new version of the I-9 Form.

This new version includes expanded instructions, the ability to add multiple preparers and a handful of changes to various fields. Example: the “Other Names Used” field is being replaced by “Other Last Names Used” to avoid possible discrimination and protect the privacy of transgender people. note: This is a writable PDF form. If using Chrome, some settings may prevent the form from displaying. If you encounter an error, please use IE or FireFox.

The new version is being called the “smart I-9” because the interactive PDF also included enhanced features to reduce errors and complete the form more easily. This includes:

  • Drop-down menus for filing in fields and selecting dates
  • Prompts to ensure information is entered fully and correctly
  • Embedded instructions for completing each field (a clickable question mark)

The new form has been updated on ABLE: http://able.harvard.edu/links/i-9-form-employment-eligibility-verification

Schools and units should begin using the new form as soon as possible, as the older version of the form will be considered invalid by USCIS as of 1/22/17. Note: older version of I-9’s completed prior to 1/22, but received in central payroll after 1/22, will be processed.
