Apply for Social Security Numbers for Tax Season

December 7, 2023

A social security number (SSN) is required to report earnings to the IRS. Individuals who have not applied for an SSN from the Social Security Administration (SSA) should do so as soon as possible.

A SSN is required for accurate tax reporting purposes, and failure to provide a correct SSN can result in a penalty under IRC section 6723.

In addition, any individual without an SSN cannot take advantage of tax refunds or tax treaties that they may be eligible for.

Guidance on how to apply for an SSN is available through the Harvard International Office. You may also contact a local SSA Office to set up an appointment.
